Sainfoin, otherwise known as “holy hay”, is a plant long recognized for its extraordinary palatability and health benefits. This forage was primarily grown for horses prior to the industrialization of agriculture, but was all but abandoned with the invention of tractors and the promise of fertilizers and weed control chemicals that would make large scale farming possible. Sainfoin is now experiencing a rebirth as scientists all over the world recognize its unique ability to resist drought, draw nutrients from deep in the earth to nourish grazing animals, fix nitrogen, sequester phosphates, and support pollinators; all necessary if we are to make headway in our quest to address climate change.

Queen Victoria named her first colt at Hampton Court, Sainfoin. Sainfoin has long been recognized as a high quality hay. Dating back to 15th century England, it was the primary forage fed to work horses and livestock. Though the plant declined in popularity as people stopped relying on horses for farm work, there’s been a recent resurgence of this legume as feed for foraging animals.
If it’s good enough for royalty, it’s good enough for your horse!
We chose Sainfoin as the base for our forage products because we believe in a species appropriate diet. This means feeding a whole food diet that is suitable for that species. At StableFeed we believe horses need forage like dogs need meat. So, why aren’t feed companies offering a diet that is as close to what horses are naturally designed to eat, instead of filling them with recycled, ultra-processed waste?
Why do we overcomplicate feeding horses? Wouldn’t it be great if you could put a scoop of clean, high quality, forage or forage-based food into your horse’s bucket, confident that they are getting everything they need for vibrant health?
StableFeed’s forage products and forage-based supplement products provide incomparable bioavailable nutrition to support optimal overall health in your horse.
