FAQ's

IS FUNDAMENTALS A COMPLETE FEED OR A RATION BALANCER?

Fundamentals is a forage-based complete feed that also functions as a ration balancer. When fed at the recommended rate, it provides balanced nutrition, including highly bioavailable vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and foundational herbal support. There is no need to add a separate ration balancer or hoof supplement.

DO I STILL NEED TO FEED HAY?

Absolutely. Fundamentals is designed to complement a forage-based diet, not replace it. Horses should always have access to appropriate forage, such as hay or pasture, with Fundamentals providing the concentrated nutrition needed to balance that forage.

WHY IS FUNDAMENTALS FORAGE-BASED?

Horses evolved to thrive on forage. By building Fundamentals around high-quality forage ingredients rather than cereal grains, we support digestive health, metabolic balance, and a more biologically appropriate diet.

WHAT MAKES FUNDAMENTALS DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL FEEDS?

Unlike many commercial feeds that rely on grains and synthetic fortification, Fundamentals is built around:

  • A forage-first philosophy
  • Whole-food ingredients
  • Highly bioavailable vitamins and chelated minerals
  • Essential amino acids
  • Core herbal blend
  • Metabolic-friendly nutrition

It's designed to nourish the horse, not simply meet minimum nutrient requirements.

IS FUNDAMENTALS SUITABLE FOR METABOLIC HORSES?

Yes. Fundamentals was developed with metabolically supportive nutrition in mind. Its forage-first formulation, controlled starch and sugar levels, and emphasis on nutrient density make it an excellent option for many horses requiring thoughtful nutritional management. We always recommend working with your veterinarian regarding horses with diagnosed medical conditions.

WHY DOES FUNDAMENTALS INCLUDE A CORE HERBAL BLEND?

Our Core Herbal Blend provides consistent year-round botanical support using herbs that were foundational across all four seasonal formulations. It creates a stable herbal base while the Seasons Biome Blend™ supplements provide targeted support that changes throughout the year.

DO I NEED TO SOAK FUNDAMENTALS?

We recommend adding water to any pelleted feed to help reduce the risk of choke. Fundamentals softens quickly because it contains no unnecessary binding agents, so it only takes a few minutes to become a soft mash.

WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE?

Fundamentals has a shelf life of approximately 6 months. Because we do not use artificial preservatives and manufacture in small batches, we recommend purchasing no more than about three months' worth during warmer months to ensure maximum freshness.

CAN I FEED FUNDAMENTALS WITHOUT THE SEASONS BIOME BLENDS™?

Yes. Fundamentals provides complete daily nutrition on its own. The Seasons Biome Blend™ supplements are designed as optional seasonal herbal support that can be added to further customize your horse's nutrition.

WHAT HORSES IS FUNDAMENTALS DESIGNED FOR?

Fundamentals was developed as a nutritional foundation for horses of all breeds, ages, and disciplines, from easy keepers and pleasure horses to senior horses and high-performance athletes. It provides a consistent base that can be adapted through seasonal herbal support and additional supplements as needed.

Our 15yo OTTB is LOVING Fundamentals! He gets 4 pounds a day soaked, along with additional supplements to balance his forage and support his needs for arthritis and a myopathy. No matter what I add to the Fundamentals, he licks the feed pan clean, because he absolutely loves the taste!

Isn't he cute!

It’s good for my mare. However, I’m a little confused about whether the seasonal mix needs to be added. When I started using it earlier this year, I thought the contents of this bag changed with the seasons, but it seems that may not be the case. In any case, some clarification would be helpful.

Hello!

Thank you for your 5-star review.

The Fundamentals has the same nutritional base as the previous feed, plus a core herbal blend that stays the same year-round. We removed a select number of seasonal herbs and made them their own separate product. That way, owners can keep the same base feed all year round but, depending on where you live, transition to different seasons as you see fit.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I have just started using this product. The horses love it! I love the ingredients and the thoughtfulness behind the product. Already horses are very, very shiny! And I can see increased energy for them.

I have wanted to switch to a more natural feed. I am so glad I found this company. My horses eat it readily. They are fairly young with good teeth. I feed dry in the am and make a mash with beet pulp in the pm. As long as you make it and keep to a holistic formula I will be a client

We don't plan on changing unless we find a way to make this even better!

All of the horses transitioned to the Fundamentals quite easily from the Seasons Biome.
